Looking after Summer and Autumn raspberries on the allotment starts with knowing how to identify each of them. Allotment gardening in the UK and growing raspberries is a great source of free fruit.
The Summer raspberries will have finished fruiting in August and the Autumn raspberries will start fruiting soon after. They rarely overlap in the south east of the UK. We look after Summer raspberries and Autumn raspberries quite differently though on the allotment.
Summer raspberries fruit on stems that grew the previous year. While Autumn raspberries fruit on stems that grew early this year. This means that if we confuse the two we could end up getting our pruning wrong and losing a crop.
The best advice is to prune the Summer raspberries soon after they finish fruiting in the Summer. This way the new stem will be fresh and green looking while the stems that bore fruit will be looking browner and very different. Simply cut the stems that have fruited down to the ground and remove them. Any new growth that looks weak or is in a poor place can be removed too. The stems that you leave will fruit next year and the plant will not produce anymore.
Pruning the Autumn raspberries in the spring is best as we simply cut them all to the ground leaving nothing showing. This will enable the plant to produce its fresh stems as the weather warms up and it will be these that fruit in the Autumn. Leaving last years stems will simply look overgrown and they are unlikely to fruit again.
