Every artist should be able to use their knowledge and skill to create things without the need for a strict reference. You should feel comfortable moving away from a reference photo if it will improve the final painting.
This is a skill that I really struggle with. Instead of copying from a single reference photo and trying to create a painting that looks the same as the reference I thought I would try something new.
I used a variety of images to gain knowledge of my subject then used all that information to create my own original wolf design straight onto the canvas.
