While here I demonstrate the use of the venerable Prusik knot for ascending a running (or fixed) line, the same technique can be applied to hauling gear across a river, extracting a vehicle from a ditch, self-rescue and a range of similar applications. Having a simple emergency belay/rappel kit can ensure your safety, and provide peace of mind when hiking with less experienced climbers. Being able to simply attach yourself to another person while crossing a river or climbing an exposed section of rock can be invaluable.
Disclaimer: Climbing can be dangerous. Practice your knots well enough ahead of time, and within 6 feet of the ground before going higher. This is simply a basic tutorial and does not take the place of actual training and experience in the field.
