A short documentary about the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Also known as Black Tuesday, the Great Crash, or the Stock Market Crash of 1929, it began on 24 October 1929, and was the most devastating stock market crash in the history of the United States. The crash signalled the beginning of the 12-year Great Depression that affected all Western industrialized countries.
The decade that followed World War I and led to the crash, also known as the Roaring Twenties, was a time of wealth and excess. Many were believing that the stock market would continue to rise forever, without taking into account the dangers of speculation. On 20 September, the London Stock Exchange crashed, weakening the optimism of American investment in markets overseas. On 29 October 1929, Wall Street was rocked by the Black Tuesday, when investors traded 16 million shares on the New York Stock Exchange in one day. Thousands of investors were wiped out as a result of the loss of billions of dollars. Prices continued to drop as the United States slumped into the Great Depression, and by 1932 stocks were worth only about 20 percent of their value in the summer of 1929.
