Here is some information about lynx:
-
Lynx are beautiful cats that live in the cold climates of Canada and Eurasia. They are not very big; they are only a bit larger than your housecat! They are approximately 8 - 14kg and only 80 - 90 cm tall. Lynx are solitary mammals that live in the northern forests of north america, europe and asia. They are covered with beautiful thick fur that keeps them warm during the cold winter months. Lynxes’ winter fur is usually thick, long and grey. In the summer, their coats become thin and light brown. Their large paws are also furry and hit the ground with a spreading motion that makes them function as natural snowshoes. They are most recognizable by the black tips of their bobbed tails and the long tufts on their triangular ears.
The lynx live in the northern forests which are called ‘boreal forests’. They live in these forests and they make dens, or homes, underneath fallen trees, stumps, rocks, or in thick bushes. These dens provide them shelter in the harsh boreal environment. The males live alone most of the time. That’s why we call them solitary predators. They are excellent hunters. They hunt at night because they have big eyes and superior hearing. They have to use these senses because they aren’t fast runners. Lynxes need to sneak up on their prey. They usually find a good hiding spot close to prey, wait quietly, and then jump, or pounce at the right moment.
Lynxes like to eat snowshoe hares, which are a kind of rabbit. They are opportunistic predators, though, and they will also eat small mammals, birds and sometimes large animals like caribou. They cannot kill caribou, but they may be able to scavenge some meat from an injured or dead one.
These stealthy cats avoid humans and hunt at night, so they are rarely seen.
There are several species of lynx. Few survive in Europe but those that do, like their Asian relatives, are typically larger than their North American counterpart, the Canada lynx. All lynx are skilled hunters that make use of great hearing (the tufts on their ears are a hearing aid) and eyesight so strong that a lynx can spot a mouse 250 feet away. Canada lynx eat mice, squirrels, and birds, but prefer the snowshoe hare. The lynx are so dependent on this prey that their populations fluctuate with a periodic plunge in snowshoe hare numbers that occurs about every ten years. Bigger Eurasian lynx hunt deer and other larger prey in addition to small animals.Lynx mate in early spring or late winter. About two months later, females give birth to a litter of one to four young.
Humans sometimes hunt lynx for their beautiful fur. One endangered population, the Iberian lynx, struggles to survive in the mountains of Spain, far from the cold northern forests where most lynx live.
