Jimmy Bruno Trio - Live at Franklin's Pub and Grill in Glenside, PA, December 6, 2021. Playing "Somewhere over the Rainbow"
My friend Matt texts me last week and says Hey, Jimmy Bruno is playing at Franklin’s Pub and Grill in Glenside, PA, Sunday night 5-8 pm. Matt says Jimmy is a great Jazz guitarist.
I took a Jazz class in college and was hooked. When I moved to Philadelphia after college, I lived about a block down 3rd Street from Ortlieb’s Jazz House. What a great place. I spent many nights a week hanging at the Jazz club, no cover except on weekends that had big shows. I moved out of the city 20 years ago and have not seen much live jazz in many years. As I drove to Glenside, I was excited about seeing some live permanence and jammed out to some tunes in the car. For some reason I though of Michael J. Fox jamming like Hendrix in ‘Back to the Future”. No particular reason really, just a thought that crossed my mind. When I walk to the small bar and seeing Jimmy massaging the guitar, it was mesmerizing.
From his website: Jimmy Bruno, born July 22, 1953 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a master jazz guitarist and jazz educator. One of the most critically acclaimed jazz guitarists performing today, Jimmy Bruno came to prominence as a jazz musician in the 1990's, after a successful twenty-year career as a sought-after commercial guitarist and session musician.
I met his neighbor while listening and within a few minutes Danny blows my mind by saying, “Yah, Jimmy played the solo in Back to the Future.” Now, I don’t even know Jimmy’s last name yet! That was…different, I still can’t quite figure that one out.
Here is sampling of The Jimmy Bruno Trio doing ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
