Do you know the FAO state of the world fisheries and aquaculture? It is a flagship report of the specialized agency of the United Nations that presents the latest statistics and trends on fisheries and aquaculture. The 2024 edition includes some key data that are relevant to Latin America and the Caribbean.
In the region, capture fisheries and aquaculture production reached 17.7 million tonnes, accounting for 8% of the global total.
Capture fisheries production of aquatic animals reached approximately 12.8 million tonnes, representing 14 percent of the global total.
Aquaculture alone produced 4.3 million tonnes, making the region the second-largest aquaculture producer in the world.
Chile and Ecuador emerge as leaders in aquaculture production of aquatic animals, together exceeding 50% of the regional total production and ranking among the Top 10 aquatic animal producers globally.
Peru stands out as one of the top global players in the capture fisheries production, among the top 5 producing countries, contributing 6% to global capture fisheries.
Despite the region's abundance, per capita consumption of aquatic foods in Latin America and the Caribbean fall below the global average: 10.7 kg per capita in 2021, compared to the world average of 20.6 kg.
Appropriate policies, investment, and technology are crucial to ensure that fisheries and aquaculture continue to provide people with healthy diets and sustainably address food insecurity.
