Every aspect of research is getting more complex, from the data to the budgets, from the research centers to the number of researchers involved in a project. But often the approach for managing this research remains small, based on an old vision of a scholar beavering away in solitude. That’s a woefully out-of-date model, and ignores how stakeholders warily observe how their money is spent and how academics involved in the project are concerned about both their scholarship and their careers. What’s the modern research manager – whether a social scientist or a STEM scientist by training -- to do?
A first step would be to watch this free webinar with Robert Dingwall, the co-editor (with Mary Byrne McDonnell of the Social Science Research Council) of the new The SAGE Handbook of Research Management. Dingwall is a consulting sociologist, part-time professor of sociology at Nottingham Trent University, and a blogger for the Social Science Space website.
