Eczema is described as dry, itchy, and red skin (atopic dermatitis). It is a common, non-contagious skin disease. If you have asthma or allergies, you are at a higher risk. At some time in life, 15% to 20% of people will get eczema or another form of dermatitis.
Eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis) is a skin disorder in which your skin becomes dry, red, itchy, and rough. It is one of several forms of dermatitis. Eczema degrades the function of the skin's barrier (the "glue" of your skin). Because of the breakdown of barrier function, your skin becomes more fragile and vulnerable to infection and dryness.
Eczema is not harmful to your health. It does not reflect that your skin is unclean or infected, nor is it contagious.
Eczema affects both men and women equally and is more prominent in those with a personal or family history of asthma, environmental allergies, and/or food allergies.
Eczema may appear anywhere on your body's skin. It is commonly observed on the hands, neck, inner elbows, ankles, knees, feet, and around the eyes of teenagers and adults.
