Giethoorn is a Dutch village in the province of Overijssel with a population of around 2800 people. It is located in the municipality of Steenwijkerland, about 5 km southwest of Steenwijk.
As a popular tourist destination, Giethoorn is often called " Dutch Venice " or " the Venice of the North " and over 1.5 million people come to visit every year.
For the most part, the village can only be reached on foot or by bike. It became locally famous, especially after 1958, when the Dutch filmmaker Bert Haanstra made his famous movie " Fanfare there".
Originally, in the old part of the village, there were no roads , and all transport was done by water over one of the many canals. Later on there was a bikepath added.
The lakes in Giethoorn were formed by peat digging. There are 9 lakes in the area.
