This plant comes along with its problems like ecological damage and outcompeting the growth of other species around it. Its ability to form dense thickets makes the food underneath it inaccessible to the wild animals, causing an imbalance in the food chain. Dr. Ramaswami has extensively worked on the problem of Lantana in the Indian forest during her PhD research at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. She is currently the Program Manager for SeasonWatch, a pan India citizen science program that tracks the effect of climate and season on plants.
