I’m here to share our picks for best surfing Spots in Santa Cruz County, for beginner, intermediate, and experienced surfers.

If you are a beginner, there are some simple things to understand in order to be safe and use proper etiquette while surfing. My friend Tamara, an experienced local surfer, will explain:
• First surfer up, closest to the curl has the right of way
• Paddle around the break to get out
• Hang on to your board. Look out for other surfers
• Help other surfers in trouble
• Respect the beach and ocean

Cowell’s Beach, Santa Cruz
Cowell’s Beach in Santa Cruz is one of the great spots in all of California for beginners. Given its reputation as great beginner surf, it tends to get crowded. That said, the vibe is always friendly, and the waves are mellow and long.

Capitola Jetty, Capitola
Capitola Jetty in Capitola, is another great spot for beginners, when the conditions are right. Here you’ll find less of a crowd than Cowell’s, but you may also find that the waves are less consistent. When the swell is up, however, the right breaking wave can go on and on.

Pleasure Point Beach, Santa Cruz
Pleasure Point Beach in Santa Cruz is a more of an intermediate spot, and is known for having a nice variety of waves. It can get crowded here, as you’ll find lots of longboards waiting to ride. The best waves here are found on the outer breaks.

Mitchell’s Cove, Santa Cruz
Depending on the conditions, Mitchell’s Cove in Santa Cruz is a great spot for intermediate to more experienced surfers. It can be inconsistent here, but when it’s good, Mitchell’s can have some of the funnest waves in all of California.

Steamer Lane, Santa Cruz
The legendary Steamer Lane is probably Santa Cruz’s most famous spot to surf. But beware, you need to be a very experienced or expert surfer to surf here. It is the most dangerous place to surf in Santa Cruz. For beginner and intermediate surfers it’s a great place to watch great surfing and get inspired.
