Video Description: High Fructose Corn Syrup gets a lot of bad press these days, and most of it is justified. Watch Keren Gilbert, Dietician and Nutritionist, as she explains the history of how and why this product replaced our natural sweeteners, and why it should be avoided.
Video Transcript: High fructose corn syrup is a man made product so it is not natural it is a processed food. It is fairly new, it was introduced to the United States in the early seventies. The way that it's made is by taking glucose syrup from corn, that is derived from corn and putting it through an enzymatic process and then it turns some of that glucose into fructose. When it gets incorporated into foods it gives them a longer shelf life which is desirable for a lot of companies, and ironically it makes foods look really bright, so you put them into baking goods and it actually makes them look fresher. Part of the problem is how attractive these packages look. I experience it myself even with what I do, my kids go to the supermarket and they see something like this which is just made of pure sugar, and this has high fructose corn syrup in it, but it kind of looks healthy because it kind of looks like orange juice and it's in a cute bottle so i can see you know, kids being attracted to that. Anything made from nature is great alternative. There's maple syrup and there's honey which have compounds from nature that help you with your immune system, and help you fight bacterial infections and have antioxidants in them and have a lot of benefits to it. And of course fruit is a way to satisfy a sweet craving because they do have that hydrophilic fiber in it so your blood sugar levels are going to go up much much slower, but it's still sugar. They're not limitless because they're good for you. I go for Stevia for a non caloric sweetener, and I really do have that on my plan, especially when people come to me to lose weight and watch their calories.
