Real Madrid officially announced that Karim Benzema will be leaving the club this summer. It is now anticipated that he will sign with the Saudi Arabian team Al Ittihad.
Benzema made the decision to depart from the LaLiga giants after a remarkable 14-year tenure, accepting a lucrative offer from a club in Saudi Arabia.
Benzema holds the distinction of being Real Madrid's second-highest goal scorer of all time and has an impressive collection of 25 trophies with the club. This includes five Champions League titles, four LaLiga championships, and the prestigious 2022 Ballon d'Or.
Real Madrid issued a statement expressing their gratitude and fondness for Benzema, highlighting his exemplary conduct, professionalism, and embodiment of the club's values. They acknowledged his right to determine his own future and emphasized that Real Madrid will always be his home, extending their best wishes to him and his family in this new phase of his life.
To honor Benzema, a special event will be held at the club's training ground on Tuesday as a tribute.
Earlier in the week, ESPN reported that Benzema had received a two-year contract offer worth €400 million to join a Saudi Arabian club in January, mirroring the deal Cristiano Ronaldo accepted when he left Manchester United to join Al Nassr.
Initially expected to remain at Madrid until June 2024, the center-forward has decided to embrace a fresh challenge instead.
Benzema arrived at Real Madrid from Lyon in 2009 and, despite a challenging start, formed a formidable attacking trio alongside Ronaldo and Gareth Bale. Following Ronaldo's departure in 2018, Benzema assumed the role of Madrid's primary goal scorer and had a standout season last year, netting 27 goals in LaLiga and 15 goals in the Champions League, contributing to the club's success in both competitions. This exceptional form led to his well-deserved Ballon d'Or win in October.
Although injuries hampered his performance this season, Benzema still managed to score 18 goals in 23 LaLiga appearances.
His impressive trophy haul of 25 titles at Real Madrid, which he shares with Marcelo, includes four LaLiga triumphs, five Champions League victories, three Copa del Rey triumphs, four Spanish Supercups, four UEFA Super Cups, and five FIFA Club World Cups.
