For a long time, the USA was considered the land of dreams and unlimited opportunities. 30 million Europeans left their homeland in the 19th century to seek their fortune in America. The largest ethnic group was the Germans. The immigrants made the country strong. And - as conquerors - they showed little consideration.

Europeans were leaving their native countries and immigrated to the USA because of many different reasons: There was a high population growth in Southern and Eastern Europe and jobs, food and available farmland were scarce. The USA on the other hand seemed quite attractive for immigrants: Land was broadly available and it was also known to have more economic opportunities. Industries like steel and railroads were booming and people had their freedom of religion and democracy.
