The federal government has announced an extra $3 million will be given to support victims of domestic violence in light of the increase in home abuse incidents during COVID-19.
Statistics indicated one in ten Australian women in a relationship were victims of domestic violence in Australia during the coronavirus pandemic.
Two thirds of these women reported the abuse had increased during the coronavirus pandemic period.
Liberal MP Katie Allen told Sky News an extra $150 million was allocated to domestic violence support since March in addition to the $3 million.
“It’s a no brainer that we need to invest to make sure we support and protect women and children in this very uncertain time,” she said,
Ms Allen said a number of Liberals MPs had called for inquiry into domestic violence incidents during the lockdown.
Labor MP Peter Khalil said education programs designed to teach young boys to respect women were just as important as funding by way of fighting domestic violence in Australia.
“Funding is one aspect of this, culture and attitude and education is another big part of it," he said.
“Having men understand their responsibility and be able to actually teach young boys particularly respect for women is where it really starts. I think educational programs are just as important.”
