ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess has referred to an operative hive of spies being the group kicked out of the country during his annual threat assessment speech on Tuesday night.

The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting these were Russian spies.

The alleged spies had been tracked for up to 18 months before being deported as part of a sweeping counter-espionage investigation conducted by ASIO.
