Amex Platinum vs Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge Access Comparison
In addition to the below reasons to get one of these cards, I thought I would Highlight the great lounge access that comes with them. With so many perks, which one will you choose?
These seem to be the two of the most popular travel cards out there. But which one is better. They have different annual fees, points earning categories, and credits and other benefits that set them apart. Hopefully going over a few of these scenarios anyone watching this will be able to determine if you should apply for these cards.
We will start with the AMEX platinum card. It has an annual fee of $695. For many people that number would be a deal breaker, but don’t count it out just yet. Lets look at what it has to offer.
Now the way I value my MR points may seem lower than other. Generally speaking, 1 MR point is $0.01. And the best way to reach the highest redemption value is through flights when booking directly from the Amextravel website, AmexTravel.com . When doing this you will be receiving the $0.01 per MR point and can maximize your redemption value.
Another way to receive more value would be to transfer out your MR points to one of American Express’ partners which can give you a value of up to $0.015 per point value. This can be much higher depending on the type of travel you want to book.
Now there are other ways you can redeem your points like shopping on amazon or through the online stores, but generally speaking I will avoid these options due to the redemption value of less than $0.01 per point.
So how do I earn points? AMEX offers 5x points on flights booked on Amextravel.com. 5x points on hotels booked on AmexTravel.com, and 1x points on everything else.
What are the benefits fo the AMEX Platinum Card?
Statement credits are the main thing we will look at.
1. $200 Hotel credit with the fine hotels and resorts. Which is usually a little pricey so this credit is just okay.
2. $240 entertainment credit which is basically broken up into $20 per month towards companies like Audible, Disney+, Hulu, Peacock, and ESPN+.
3. $200 uber/uber eats credit
4. $100 saks fifth avenue credit.
5. $155 Walmart credit for Walmart+ which can give you cheaper gas and will deliver your groceries for free.
These are the big benefits/credits I use that more than cover the annual fee for me. So for me it makes sense to keep this card. I suspect many of you use these services already.
Other benefits worth noting are the free status upgrades with Marriot and Hilton automatically to gold, cell phone protection, and travel insurances. Not to mention, all the lounges access like the Centurion lounge, Delta, and priority pass access.
Chase Sapphire Reserve
