The topic of this lecture is “Does the Poetry after Auschwitz exist?”
We will discuss the famous statement by Theodor Adorno that “to write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric”.
What traces did poetry acquire after the Holocaust and how is Holocaust represented in the poetry? The look into the verses by Paul Celan, Nelly Sachs and Dan Pagis will help to understand the modes of modern poetry and the traces of Holocaust in it.
Among other we will touch upon the following questions:
• What is the secret of Celan’s surname?
• What is the most widely cited poem by Dan Pagis?
• What role had Selma Lagerlöf played in the destiny of Nelly Sachs?
• What common is there in the poetry of Paul Celan, Nelly Sachs and Dan Pagis?
