Liberal Senator Eric Abetz says Australia "must follow" the lead of the United States and diplomatically boycott the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
In a move announced on Monday, the US will diplomatically boycott next year's winter Games to take a stand against China's "egregious human rights abuses".
"The decision by the United States, our close ally and friend, to diplomatically boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics is a most welcome move and one in that Australia must follow suit," Mr Abetz said.
"Australia must not be complacent but move with speed to demonstrate our long commitment to upholding human rights and calling out where they are breached."
