Hey guys! Welcome back to KnifeHog.com. Addison here and today I’ll be reviewing the Ontario SPAX 16 survival and rescue axe.
This axe has an overall length of about 13”, an axe head measuring 8” and weighs 26 ounces. The head of this axe is constructed of a ¼” thick 1095HC steel and features a flat grind, multi-purpose hole and spike at its end. The handle of this axe is composed of a semi-textured Kraton material and features a lanyard hole with a small length of cordage looped through it. A nylon sheath also comes included with this axe.
Overall, the SPAX-16 is an excellent survival and rescue axe. Its tough head steel and general structure make it easy to handle and deal out forceful hacks without its weight throwing your aim in a different direction. The multi purpose hole fitted on the axe head could be used to unscrew the nobs of oxygen tanks, gas valves and even fire hydrants. The spike fitted at the end of the head could also be used to pry open doors. The flat grind of the head can virtually chop and cut through just about anything you put in its path. Honestly, the handle could use a bit more texture but that’s not really a deal breaker for me. It is very obvious that this tool was designed to be used mainly by fireman and first responders, but it could also be used for general cutting tasks with limited performance ability. If it weren’t for its purpose specific structure, I would give this axe a perfect score but I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars.
