Poorly performed or poorly controlled heather burning can have a negative effect on the underlying peat and contribute to the release of greenhouse gases or carbon (of which peat is a major store) have a detrimental effect on water quality and lead to wildfires.
It is allowed into mid-April, by which time ground-nesting owls and other birds may already be sitting on eggs and will most likely abandon.
There are some who alleged that gamekeepers deliberately burn these areas as they see owls as vermin who will take grouse chicks as part of their diet. *That* is natural
Killing everything that might eat eggs or chicks is *totally un-natural and illegal* but we all know it goes on and everyone that has some part in this persecution of wildlife will totally deny it.
Lord knows what harm this practice does to the ozone layer and climate change.
