Sandy soils are scattered throughout Punjab but more frequently found in Thal area and Cholistan. More than a half million acres of wheat is planted in sandy loam and sandy soils. Not only more amount of fertilizer is needed but repeated application of fertilizer in split doses is recommended to produce wheat crop. Tillering behavior of wheat is hampered in such soils. Therefore, instead of broadcast, timely reduced space drill planting of wheat using higher seed rate of 55-60 kg/acre in the dry soil followed by irrigation is suggested in such cases. Drilling of P and K fertilizer along with the seed is also better option for efficient use of fertilizers. After canopy formation, spray able NPK fertilizers may repeatedly be used from 5-7 times with the interval of 15-20 days until the booting stages.
Sandy soils are not famous for higher production of wheat crop. But there are some fertilizers that are proven to be most effective for such type of soils. Production technology of wheat is improving day by day. Modern techniques, methods and fertilizers are taking place of previous methods and fertilizers as well. This is need of the time to adopt modern technology to cope with the rising prices of all types of products and machinery. If we will nor succeed in gaining higher yield of wheat crop, it will become difficult to convince farmers to grow wheat on a larger area of land. Production and overall average of wheat crop should be increased by using different new ways. In this video, I have tried to explain different fertilizers that perform better in sandy soils.
