Difference between Apical an Axillary bud :
1. Location: The apical bud is located at the tip of the stem or branch, while the axial bud is found in the leaf axil, which is the upper angle between the leaf and the stem.
Example: In a rose plant, the apical bud is present at the topmost part of the stem, while the axial bud can be found in the leaf axils along the stem.
2. Growth: The apical bud is responsible for primary growth, leading to the lengthening of the stem or branch, while the axial bud contributes to secondary growth, resulting in the thickening of the stem.
Example: In a pine tree, the apical bud promotes vertical growth, allowing the tree to grow taller, while the axial buds contribute to the increase in girth of the stem, making the tree broader.
3. Dominance: The apical bud exhibits apical dominance, inhibiting the growth of lateral branches, while the axial bud can give rise to lateral branches.
Example: In a palm tree, the apical bud at the top of the trunk suppresses the development of lateral branches, giving the tree its characteristic tall and slender appearance. However, the axial buds in the leaf axils can produce lateral branches.
4. Role in reproduction: The apical bud is essential for reproductive structures like flowers and fruits, while the axial bud primarily contributes to vegetative growth.
Example: In an apple tree, the apical bud is responsible for producing flowers, which eventually develop into fruits. The axial buds, on the other hand, produce leaves and new shoots for vegetative growth.
These differences highlight the distinct roles and locations of the apical bud and axial bud in plant growth and development.
