Today we’re going through the entire process of tuning the batter head, resonant head, and muffling a bass drum so that you can make your kick drum sound way more awesome than you thought possible. We’ll quickly tune up the batter head before discussing all the factors that affect resonant head tuning. We’ll troubleshoot common bass drum issues like how to deaden it without adding more muffling, how to get a distinct “note” out of your drum, and how to quickly alter its tone and pitch on the fly during a gig. We’ll finish by answering the question of “how much muffing should we actually put inside our bass drum?” This is my realtime process of tuning any kick drum, and I’m leaving nothing out. There are no secrets, just ordinary methods that work. Be ready to experiment, too, because every drum is different. Follow the general guidelines, however, and you’ll be good to go toward tuning you kick drum and making any bass drum sound musical, deep, punchy, and beefy.
