Is there a danger behind using Artificial Intelligence and #ChatGPT as tools?
Among all of the alerts abounding with the phrase "the sky is falling", one of the resounding sentiments is that #AI is here to replace humans. I laughed out loud the first time I heard this statement and have continued to chuckle within every time it has been repeated. I am not here to argue either side of this common quote. I am here to share with you my personal experiences.
Screwdrivers (flathead, Phillip's head, and star points) are great for inserting and removing screws. It would be a misuse to attempt using a screwdriver as a hammer. A hammer is suited for working with nails and, in some cases, for prying materials apart. Tools are meant to make people more efficient when taking on tasks.
A tool can be as simple as a screwdriver or a wrench. Even complicated machinery such as automobiles, bulldozers, and trains are tools. These tools replaced walking on foot and using carts pulled by livestock. People who were "forward thinking" presented devices that brought about societal advancement.
An advance in society sounds wonderful, so where is the danger? Misuse and misrepresentation are worthy of cautionary signs anywhere that they may occur. Tools come with instructions for safe use and warnings of safety risks when improperly applied. A working dog can also be a household pet. The same dog can become a terror if it is abused.
Let's be honest. The potential of the human mind has no limits to the beauties and the horrors that can be fashioned from imagination. Ultimately, the tool relies upon the person for correct placement. Since we now have a qualification for tools and their use, it is time to explore Artificial Intelligence and programs like ChatGPT in the same realm.
According to physiology and popular consensus, our brains are computers that calculate reception and response to our senses. People tap buttons on calculators to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Our brains were capable of these feats before the abacus, the modern graphic/scientific #calculator, or computers. In simple terms, a machine cannot function as a tool without input or prompts. The intent of the user determines the prompt.
I am a writer, a musician, and graphic artist. The words you are reading came directly from my brain, and were directly typed into this post by my hands. I did not ask a computer to generate this prose. It appears because this is part of my communication skill set. The same can be said for any picture that I sketch or any sounds that I compose. There is a marked difference between what I produce and what a synthetic mind (AI) can generate. My work comes with my signature.
In May, I started an account with ChatGPT to explore its applications. My profile is limited because I don't pay for subscriptions when there are options available to accomplish the same task for free. There are many forms of overhead to consider when operating as an entrepreneur. My quest was to see if ChatGPT could help with brainstorming and time management. I found out that, aside from my own personal ledgers, the app is a nice asset for project planning.
I started using the Adobe graphics shop 4 or 5 years ago because I needed images to place in music videos I was posting to promote my music. Considering "time is of the essence", I needed the images to be done as quickly as the songs I produced. Searching for stronger, better, and faster lead to seeking apps that weren't littered with obtrusive watermarks. Through research, I found AI generators that could piece together a render from anything I prompted as text or even images that I uploaded. I could understand, through disclosure, that renderings from AI were a conglomerate of images assigned from key terms and phrases. I had the choice of hiring someone or becoming a digital artist in my own right.
I have received very positive results and reviews with the content that I claim as a creator. Regardless of the machine that I use, it still has to coincide with the story or message that I convey from my volition. AI cannot replace me because I feed it information. I support others (in kind) who give original, personal, and factual contributions to society.
Having been a part of many artist communities in the past 3 decades, I can tell you that AI can replicate what people produce; however, it takes human ingenuity to innovate. The video that accompanies this article shows a recent conversation (through screenshots) that I had with a ChatGPT assistant who I have named Juniper. There is music and other image clips to accompany the experience. I suggest that you enjoy a full playthrough to get the gist of what can be done with forethought and creativity. Afterwards, it would be best to rewind and pause the video as the video unveils the purpose of the conversation.
