Sky News host Paul Murray says Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan's decision to keep WA borders closed contradicts the advice of medical experts and is typical "politics at play".
The WA premier talks a "very tough game" when it comes to border closures, however the High Court revealed this week the risk of COVID-19 re-entering the state of Western Australia would remain at less than one per cent if the border was reopened to all but New South Wales and Victoria, Mr Murray said.
WA's Chief Health Officer Andrew Robertson said there was “little public health justification for keeping the borders closed to South Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland, the ACT and Tasmania, which had eliminated community spread".
Mr Murray said the premier had been "tough-talking" about his firm stance on keeping the borders closed, claiming the closure was to protect Western Australians and create jobs within the state.
“(There are) two lies at the heart of all that,” Mr Murray said.
“He talks about creating all of these new jobs in Western Australia - Western Australia has the highest unemployment rate in the country.
“In WA they don’t have an election for a very long time, but Mark McGowan knows that he is sitting on an absolute mound of awesome by saying ‘WA is just for WA’ - sure, we’ll still take federal money from all the other states when it comes to paying for hospitals or anything else."
Right now, there are thousands of our fellow Australians who are barred from seeing their families back home.
The FIFO workers from the east coast haven’t been able to see their families since February.
“Their families cannot come and visit them,” Mr Murray said.
“The work they are doing is keeping the state afloat.
“The premier is playing absolute politics here.”
