Joe Rogan & Jesse Itzler Podcast About Misogi
[ Ссылка ]
So yesterday I was driving home from my cousins house following Fathers Day and was listening to the Joe Rogan Podcast. The guest on the Podcast was Jessie Itzler. Fascinating guy who has an impressive resume.
In his early 20's he was a rapper and built a company writing jingles for sports teams. He also wrote a few songs for Ton Loc. He went on to found one of the largest private jet card companies in the world and later Zico Coconut water which sold to Coca Cola for uber bucks. His wife is also the creator of Spanx. The guy has lived a fascinating life.
During the podcast he talked about doing a "Misogi". A Misogi is a Japanese cleansing ritual. It involved doing some physical task and then a ceremony and bathing under a waterfall. For our purposes were less interested in the history and more interested in how it can be used as a tool to improve ourselves and our lives.
So this Misogi thing was kind of popularized by Kyle Korver of the Atlanta Hawks. Recently one of his was paddleboarding 27 miles. In a previous year he and some teammates went out to the ocean wearing weight belts. They did a 5 mile relay where one guy would swim to the bottom, grab an 85 pound boulder and run as far as he could, when he was tapped out he would come up to the surface and the next guy would go down. All the while the guys not running with the boulder are on the surface treading water in a weight belt.
Basically a Misogi is some type of challenge you take on once per year, that is meant to transform the way you think about personal limitations and really challenge yourself. The main thing about a Misogi is it has to be something very challenging to the point you basically have a 50/50 shot of completing because it's that tough. For some people it could be running a marathon, for others it could be climbing a mountain and for others it could be biking across the USA.
We as humans are risk averse. From an evolutionary standpoint way back in the day of hunters and gatherers, if we were injured we would basically die. Today we live in a different world, we can afford to take more risks and push ourselves more, but many of us don't.
So basically the whole idea of a Misogi is doing something once a year to challenge yourself and push your limits and because it's so extreme it's supposedto have a lasting effect on you for the rest of the year.
I'll probably make another video talking more about Jesse and some of his feats and attitudes towards life. In addition to his impressive resume he also went and lived with Monks for a while, another time he had David Goggins the ultra marathoner, former Navy Seal, and guy who holds the world record for the most pullups come live with him for a month after which he wrote a book about it.
Anyhow, I'll probably do a followup show or two talking more about this but for this post just wanted to introduce you to the concept of a Misogi.
