Historically, the Kaw people lived in the middle Midwest of the US. They are also known as the "People of the South Wind," "People of Water," Kansa, Kaza, Konza, Conza, Quans, Kosa, and Kasa. The tribe language is Kansa, a Siouan language. Kansas was named after this tribe. Topeka, Kansas' capital city, is derived from the Kaw term "Tó Ppí Kˀé," which means "a good place to grow potatoes".The Kaw people share a close relationship with the Osage Nation and frequently intermarry.
