Kissing on the lips was a tradition among leaders of socialist countries. This kiss, called the socialist fraternal kiss, was a symbol of the agreement of the two leaders or their political closeness. Although some socialist leaders, such as Fidel Castro, eschewed this kiss, most leaders liked this way of greeting. The most famous socialist fraternal kiss was the one between Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and East German leader Erich Honecker in 1979, at the 30th anniversary celebration of the founding of East Germany. This kiss gained popularity in 1990 when the famous painter Dmitri Vrubel painted it on the Berlin Wall called My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love.
