In the inaugural women's Olympic Marathon in 1984, Joan Benoit of the USA dominated the race winning the gold medal. However, the race may best be remembered for the incredible display of sheer determination shown by Switzerland's Gabriela Andersen-Schiess. Schiess was suffering from severe dehydration due to the hot and humid running conditions and as she entered the stadium, she was staggering and wobbling around as she made her way around the track. Incredibly, after 5 minutes on the track, she finished in 2:48:44, 37th of 44 finishers.
