Understanding wind, cover and animal behavior can help you plan and execute an effective stalk when hunting critters. Every stalking situation is different but identifying the resources present and planning accordingly can result in exciting hunts and fresh meat to take home! Watch to see how Daniel and Heath used these elements to execute successful spot and stalk hunts on hogs in Florida!
When we consider both Heath’s and Daniel’s stalks, they are great examples of how important playing the wind is for a successful hunt. Many critters such as hogs, deer and elk have excellent senses of smell and being able to approach and hunt without alerting critters often leads to great encounters.
It’s also important to note how cover plays into stalking. Heath was able to get within bow range by keeping tall vegetation between him and the hog. During Daniel’s hunt cover was limited and he had to use the terrain as his cover. He also used a weapon that better fit his stalking situation.
