One of the most common beginner mistakes is holding the paddle with the blade angle facing backwards. Intuitively beginners think they can "scoop" more water with the blade angled toward the paddler like an ice cream scoop. This is inefficient as the blade angle quickly turns upward, so the water is pushed upward instead of straight back for maximum forward propulsion. So always hold your paddle with the blade angled forward as shown in the video, this will make the stroke noticeably more efficient. Another mistake covered is holding the shaft too high with the lower hand or switching grip height when changing sides.

Mastering Paddle Handling: Your Essential Guide from Blue Planet
Ready to embark on your stand up paddleboarding (SUP) journey with confidence? Proper paddle handling is key to unlocking your full potential on the water. Let Blue Planet be your guide as we dive into the essential techniques for holding your paddle correctly and paddling with precision.
Step 1: Grip the Paddle
Start by gripping the paddle with both hands, ensuring your hands are shoulder-width apart. The angle of your hands should be slightly wider than 90 degrees, with your knuckles facing forward.
Step 2: Position the Blade
Position the blade of the paddle in the water, making sure it's fully submerged before beginning your stroke. The angle of the blade should be perpendicular to the surface of the water for maximum efficiency.
Step 3: Engage Your Core
As you paddle, engage your core muscles to generate power and stability. Keep your movements fluid and controlled, focusing on a smooth and consistent stroke pattern.
Step 4: Maintain Proper Form
Throughout your paddleboarding session, focus on maintaining proper form to minimize fatigue and maximize efficiency. Keep your shoulders relaxed, your back straight, and your gaze forward as you paddle.
Step 5: Practice Makes Perfect
Like any skill, mastering paddle handling takes time and practice. Start with short sessions in calm water, gradually increasing the duration and intensity as you build confidence and proficiency.
