(Preface) 'Andreas Gursky, born 1955 in Leipzig, is one of those successful photographers who studied under Bernd Becher at the Dusseldorf Academy and has since achieved international recognition. In large-format, color photographs Gursky captures vast, panoramic views of entire cityscapes, endless horizons, huge factory halls and spaces crowded with people, often from a bird's eye view, and always from a distance.

The people in Gursky's tableaux, which in terms of composition and the use of light are reminiscent of Romantic landscape painting, shrink to tiny staffage, whose individuality seems to disappear in the "ornament of the masses" Gursky's portraits of exterior and interior spaces, where either work or play takes place, neither denounce nor offer psychological explanations; they are subtle descriptions of our society. Our volume, which accompanies a retrospective at the Kunsthalle Dusseldorf, is the first large monograph on Andreas Gursky's photographic work since 1984.'
