“ Rhino” means nose “rhea” means leak. Now what are the causes of a leaky nose? Commonest cause is a viral infection. Invariably infections are associated with other symptoms like pain, fever, headache, sore throat, ear pain. Initially it will be watery leak from the nose. Generally by the 2nd or the 3rd day, the secretion from the nose generally tends to become thicker, when we would suspect that the patient has a secondary bacterial infection. Now there are other times when the nose tries to leak and it is watery. We also experience watery runny nose when we eat spicy food. That is because the eyes will tear and the tears from the eyes will get into the nose through the nasolacrimal duct and hence we will see clear fluid from our nose. Another condition is allergic rhinitis, which means allergy of the nose, in which the lining of the nose gets inflamed because of an allergic reaction. People with allergic rhinitis will have sneezing, itching around the nose, eyes, ears and watery runny nose and will eventually lead to nose blocks, sniffing, sinus problems, post nasal drips, sore throat, itchy throat. The 3 conditions mentioned will cause watery nasal leaks on both sides.
