In this video, using the example of Netflix documentary: The Tinder Swindler, I analyze the psychology of the "blame of a victim".
Why is it that the human nature tends to blame victims and overlook all the psychological settings that makes one person fall into a romance scam (in that situation) ? What are the bias implicated ? Are the victims really responsible ? What are the origins of victim blaming ?
I try to answer those questions through the cases of Simon Leviev's victim: Cecilie Fjellhoy, Pernilla Sjoholm et Ayleen Charlotte.
The Tinder Swindler is a Netflix documentary directed by Felicity Morris that relates how Shimon Hayut, also known as Simon Leviev, a so-called Israeli billionaire, who pretends to be the heir of a diamond empire, managed to trick multiple women met on Tinder into giving him millions of dollars. First, Hayut pretending to be Leviev, spends without counting for these women, with stays in five-star hotels, and trips by private jets. But also with his romantic gestures and by being attentionate, so they can feel like they are living a fairytale.
After a few weeks, he asked them to send him money because of a dangerous situation he claimed to have found himself in, sending a photo of his shirt covered in blood and claiming that his enemies are after him.
Hayut stole in total an estimated amount of $10 million from his victims. One side is literally still enjoying his life, the other side who has been left (allegedly) either in debt, depressed or destroyed mentally is getting the meanest comments and all the backlash...
