Popular on the international scene since 2010, Xu Qu explores through his paintings, sculptures and installations the reality of a globalized world. In his piece “Currency Wars” (2015) he highlights the world’s economic war as he transforms details of certain bank notes from around the world in order to create abstract and colorful geometric figures. These paintings, mounted onto movable structures, showcase two sides of the same coin: one that is neat and in focus, evoking a fresh banknote in the spirit of geometrical abstraction of the 60s; the other, voluntarily blurred, representing used currency.
