Operation Greif was a special operation executed by the German forces during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. The operation was led by the Waffen-SS commando Otto Skorzeny, who was known for his unorthodox methods.
The primary objective of Operation Greif was to create confusion and chaos behind the Allied lines. This plan involved English-speaking German commandos who were dressed in allied army uniforms and equipped with Allied weapons and vehicles. These commandos were to infiltrate American lines to misdirect traffic, tamper with road signs, cut communication lines, and spread misinformation. One of the main goals was to capture bridges over the Meuse river.
However, most of the Germans were captured or killed, and the operation failed. Skorzeny’s men did manage to cause some confusion but the Allies quickly recovered.
