The Department of Economics at Kerala University's Karyavattom campus hosted a lecture by Professor Lekha Chakraborty on "Fiscal Policy and Elections." Dr. Lekha S. Chakraborty is Professor at National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, India ( research institute of Ministry of Finance). She is elected as Member of the Governing Board of Management of International Institute of Public Finance ( IIPF), Munich. She is also affiliated as Research Associate with the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College, New York.

Against the backdrop of recent election outcomes, she explained that voters tend to re-elect governments based on their policy performance. Professor Chakraborty presented global evidence highlighting the challenges faced by fiscal policy makers in balancing accommodative policies with high debt and deficit levels. She noted that high deficits are manageable in low-interest-rate regimes but become costly as interest rates rise. With numerous countries heading into elections this year, the pressure to maintain accommodative fiscal policies is intense. The event featured opening remarks by Professor Sheeja, Head of the Economics Department, and a discussion with international students from Kenya, Zimbabwe, Yemen, and Afghanistan on the political economy aspects of their respective countries. The lecture was attended by economics and finance students and research scholars from Kerala University.
