Chris Bangle is one of the most important figures in BMW's history. After Claus Luthe's departure in 1990, the BMW styling department found itself in a difficult spot. Design was at the very bottom of the totem pole, with engineering and finance controlling the bulk of vehicle development. BMW hired Chris Bangle in 1992 and his impact was felt pretty much immediately. He presided over the E65 7-Series, E85 Z4, and E90 3-Series. For better or for worse, Chris Bangle gave BMW styling a much-needed shot in the arm.
