5/29/22. I love everything about the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, but this might be one of my favorite hikes of all time! It has everything -- Very long and narrow slot canyons, many non-trivial chokestones, washes, slickrock, offtrail navigation, and one of the most amazing geologic features ever -- the Cosmic Astray, and a nice climb on top of the island in the middle of the ashtray to boot! This starts at the Harris Wash Trailhead, and head north through the Red Breaks and Big West Fork before heading East across country to the ashtray, then back on a dirt road.
This is a long video, because the intent was to fully show all the slot canyon obstacles and narrowness, so that if someone does this hike they know what to expect. The slot canyon stuff is the first 35-40 minutes, and the Cosmic Ashtray is the last 15-20.
