Albert Santos Dumont was the world's most famous aviator before the Wright brothers' first flight in 1903. Many believed he beat them in being the first to design and fly an airplane. On October 23, 1906, Dumont's "Bird of Prey" (No. 14 bis) achieved an unassisted takeoff, flying some196 feet under its own power.
One month later, in front of a large crowd in a Paris Park, he made a second 21-second flight, reaching an altitude of 20 feet and a distance of over 700 feet. His flight during a Paris aerial competition was the first to be witnessed by a large crowd and the first to be certified by an official aeronautics institution.
