NASA's Artemis program aims to land astronauts on the moon's surface and establish a permanent presence there. On November 16, NASA successfully launched Artemis 1 from Launch Complex 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 1:47 a.m. EST (0647 GMT).

It completed a 25.5-day lunar mission with a successful splashdown off the coast of Mexico's Baja Peninsula on December 11, 2022, at 12:40 p.m. EST. The name of the program is inspired by Artemis, the Greek goddess of the moon and Apollo's twin sister, whose namesake mission first sent humans to our natural satellite on July 20, 1969.

One of the most ambitious goals of the Artemis mission is to use the moon as a stepping stone to a Mars expedition. So far, robots have done all of the investigation on Mars, but NASA now plans to send astronauts there by the 2030s. With the Red Planet as our ultimate goal, the return to the moon will provide us with the knowledge and tools we need to better traverse our solar system.
