1. Dual -Certified and Extra Coverage
The Little Nutty is a dual-certified helmet, meaning it’s certified for biking and skateboarding use. Compared to standard bike helmets, they tend to come lower on the front, sides, and back.
2. MIPS Safety Technology
All Nutcase helmets now come standard with MIPS! MIPS stands for Multi-Directional Impact Protection System.
MIPS consists of a plastic layer inside the helmet that is anchored in place by flexible anchors. In the event of a crash, these anchors flex to allow the plastic layer to shift and rotate upon impact. While the brain science can get complicated, in simple terms, this reduces rotational motion that can cause more severe brain damage. This is why they also call MIPS a BPS – or Brain Protection System!
3. Magnetic Fid-Lock Buckle Makes Buckling Easier!
We LOVE magnetic buckles! While certainly not a necessity, they really do make buckling and unbuckling the helmet a lot easier. And they definitely decrease the chance for pinching your child’s neck, which is a HUGE bonus, especially on squirming toddlers.
4. Side Straps and Locking Sliders
The side straps on a helmet are meant to form a “V” beneath the child’s ear. This helps keep the helmet centered on the head.
On most helmets, the plastic slider can come out of place pretty easily and needs to be adjusted regularly. The Nutcase Little Nutty has locking sliders which keep them tightly in place!
5. Dial-Adjust for Best Fit
The dial-adjust knob on the back of the helmet allows you to quickly and easily tighten the back of the helmet so it fits snuggly on your child’s head. The Nutcase dial-adjust is high-quality and easy to grab.
6. Sizing
Who is the Little Nutty the Right Size for?
Designed for toddler and kids, the Nutcase Little Nutty comes in two sizes: Toddler (48-52 cm), and Youth (52-56 cm).
We tested the Nutcase Little Nutty Toddler size with three kids with head circumferences ranging from 49 to 50. As you can see, it’s a great fit for all of them!
In addition to size ( head circumference measurement), the width of the Little Nutty Toddler and the Little Nutty Youth are different. Skater-style helmets are generally known for being round and wide, and a particularly great fit for kids with round or wide heads. Based on our tests, we found this to be true for the Little Nutty Youth, but not for the Little Nutty Toddler.
If your child has a rounder head and a circumference in the 52 – 56 cm range, the Little Nutty Youth should be a great fit for them. But if your child has a rounder head and a 48 – 52 cm head circumference, the Little Nutty Toddler may be too narrow for them.
7. A Few Limitations
We LOVE the Little Nutty, but there is NO perfect helmet. There are a few limitations that we want you to be aware of
First - dual certified helmets are quite a bit heavier than standard biking helmets. None of our testers were bothered by the extra weight, but it is something to consider.
Second - The new Little Nutty has a pony tail hole in the back. It’s a super cool concept, but we found it too difficult to get the pony tail through the hole to be truly useful.
