Sandy Hotchkiss, a psychotherapist, first described the 7 deadly sins of narcissism, as following:
Number 1. Shamelessness.
Shame is the underlying cause in all situations of toxic narcissism. Shame is processed normally in a healthy person, however narcissists have difficulties processing this feeling in a healthy manner. Narcissists also have a tendency to transfer their shame onto others, which is known as projection.
Number 2. Magical thinking.
Narcissists use distortion and illusion to envision themselves as perfect, a practice known as magical thinking.
Number 3. Arrogance.
Narcissism is characterized by arrogance and a disregard for other people's feelings. Narcissists frequently have poor self-esteem, which they try to compensate for, by criticising or humiliating others. When they are feeling deflated or worthless, this helps to re-inflate their ego.
Number 4. Envy.
A narcissist may gain a sense of superiority in the face of another person's ability, by minimizing the other person with contempt.
Number 5. Entitlement.
Because they believe they are special, narcissists have unrealistic expectations of special treatment and automatic obedience. Failure to comply is regarded as an assault on their dominance, and the perpetrator is regarded as "awkward" or "difficult." Defying their will is a narcissistic injury that can lead to narcissistic rage.
Number 6. Exploitation.
It can take various forms, but it always entails the exploitation of others without regard for their feelings or interests. Often, the other is in a submissive position, making resistance difficult, if not impossible. Subservience is often assumed rather than real.
Number 7. Bad boundaries.
Most narcissists fail to recognize their own boundaries and do not acknowledge that other people are individuals, not their extensions. Those who feed the narcissist's self-esteem are expected to do so indefinitely, while the narcissist fails to appreciate the other person's independence.
