Sports Medicine and orthopedic surgeon M. Brian Polsky, MD talks shoulder pain and labral tears.
With a labral tear shoulder pain can present in a number of ways: stiffness, instability (or looseness), meaning it might feel like your shoulder is coming out of the socket, giving you sharp stabbing pain. The labram in the shoulder is a structure that goes around the socket that acts like a suction cup to keep the ball in place, and when you have a labral tear, the suction in your shoulder is not normal. This may cause you to experience pain in over-the-head or behind-the-back activities; such as pain while throwing, or painful noise: popping, clicking, catching. An anterior (front) labral tear, can give you real instability, or dislocations in the shoulder area. A superior (top of the socket), tear can cause catching, noise, pain, but doesn't come out of the socket. A posterior tear can cause grinding and pain.
