Anyone with a power meter knows the question of how to raise your FTP. Seeing your FTP increase is a huge motivation in itself and shows that you are getting better and faster on a bike. I go in depth on how to raise your FTP, conquer some myths on FTP in general, and detail some workouts that you can do on your own to raise your FTP on your own.
FTP (Functional Threshold Power) is a key element of cycling, and it is used by popular indoor training platforms (Zwift, Training Peaks, etc.) to group riders into categories for races and rides. Knowing what your FTP is has become essential in many training plans for all kinds of athletic goals. Cyclists have been chasing the secret for how to raise your FTP quickly, and what workouts / plans will be the best to keep your FTP increasing over a long period of time.
From my experience, and from other more scientific studies done over the last decade, I have learned that High-Intensity Interval Training is one of the most important aspects of increased FTP. However, doing those HIIT workouts alone without giving your body the necessary rest, as well as variance in your training, will significantly limit the gains that you will be able to achieve, and how much you will be able to hold on to that increase in FTP over a long period of time.
How To Raise Your FTP Quickly:
- Be Consistent: Make sure you are riding consistently and giving yourself enough rest days, planning your weeks so that the hard workouts are evenly spaced out. Make SURE that you are giving yourself lighter workouts between the heavier loads.
- Vary Your Training: To increase your FTP, only doing High-Intensity Interval Training will give you a quick boost, but sprinkling in other long workouts will be significantly better for you over the short and long term.
- Test Often: Make sure that you are keeping track of your FTP over time, and that you are consistently tracking that growth. That will give you huge insight into what workouts and plans are the best for your particular needs, and you can adapt any training plan to work with your personal genetics.
- Like This Video! Ok maybe this won’t increase your FTP… but it will be fun! :)
- Push Yourself. No matter how great your training plan is on January 1st, if you can’t push yourself during the workouts, and get out there and ride (or just in your living room) you won’t be able to see any FTP increase. Get out there and work hard!
