Ichthyosis, the word basically means scaly skin. Its fish-like scaly skin. Ichthyosis is a variable disorder. It can present with various intensities and severities. There are several forms of Ichthyosis. Some of the forms are inherited, autosomal dominant, X linked dominant, lot of inheritance patterns. Rarely there is acquired Ichthyosis which occurs as a result of some acquired disorders like diabetes, thyroid problems, as we get more into the older age. Basically a skin with v would present as dryness and you can see this superficial fish like scaling and some of them. In a severe phase you can see a large plate like brown scales which are present. This would be predominantly more on the lower legs, more on the shin area and the forearms. These would worsen, say in winter with low humidity. So anyone presenting with a very dry and scaly kind of a skin with a little brown patches on the skin can be thought of having some ichthyosis.
