The Keirin originates in Japan and was introduced to the Olympics in 2000. You might recognise this one – it's where the riders follow a motorbike for the first few laps.

With a race distance of 8 laps, and the first 5 1/2 laps motor paced behind a derny, the Keirin is one of the most unique events in the velodrome.

Although it is slightly longer than the other sprint events, it is still one for the sprinters, with Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton the 2012 Olympic champions.
