STORYLINE
Hundreds of people on Wednesday attended the funerals of two Palestinians killed in an Israeli airstrike the previous evening in Gaza City.
The Israeli military said the building destroyed in the Tuesday missile strike housed "Islamic Jihad terrorists, involved in attacks against Israelis".
However, the two people killed were apparently bystanders who were walking outside the house, according to Palestinian officials and hospital doctors.
One of the dead was a police officer returning home from work.
Islamic Jihad officials said the main target was area commander Mohammed Kharoubi, but he escaped.
They would not say if he was wounded.
Also on Wednesday, an Israeli helicopter fired a missile at a crowd of people in the southern Gaza Strip, killing at least two people and wounding five others, Palestinian residents said.
The latest missile strike targeted a group of fighters that had gathered near the site of an Israeli ground operation in the Rafah refugee camp, Palestinian sources said.
They said civilians were also among the crowd.
Residents said two people had been killed.
But the director of Rafah''''s small Najar Hospital confirmed only one death - a boy whose body was brought to the hospital in pieces.
He said five others were wounded, including a boy in critical condition.
Military sources said the army was in the camp trying to uncover tunnels used by the Palestinians to smuggle arms from Egypt into the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli army confirmed the latest missile strike, saying it had fired at a group of militants that approached its troops.
At his West Bank headquarters, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat denounced the Israeli offensive.
The missile strike attack was one of several launched by Israel on Gaza in recent days.
